Medical Negligence
Medical Malpractice occurs when a doctor, nurse, or other healthcare provider, fails to properly perform their job. Their failure is known in the legal world as “deviating from the recognized standard of professional practice.” In layman’s terms, they did not perform at the level they were required to and their failure to do so is medical negligence.
Many times these acts of negligence can cause severe and permanent injuries and even death.
According to a study by Health Grades Inc., medical errors occur much more commonly than we assume; “The United States loses more American lives to patient safety incidents every six months than it did in the entire Vietnam War.” If medical errors were included in the Center for Disease Control & Prevention in its report on causes of death, medical errors would be ranked above diabetes, pneumonia, influenza, and many other common illnesses as the leading cause of death.
While these statistics are shocking, they only account for DEATHS as a result of medical errors. They do not address serious or permanent injury resulting from medical error, including trauma to the infant or mother during childbirth.
What does this mean for the average American?
